Stories & Tales (11 & Up)

An immersive writing course combining reading, discussion, writing, and performance. The texts for this course will be chosen from children’s stories in cultures around the world, including but not limited to folk tales, myths, epic poems, and so on. In keeping with the theme of Cheekwood’s summer art installations, the literature chosen for the summer 2019 Writing & Creativity Workshop will feature works by some favorite children’s authors, like Beatrix Potter and Dr. Seuss, and also some that are not-so-well-known. The Workshop is intended to broaden students’ awareness of & connection to their world through the lens of story and myth and also the stories they learn to write – dreaming them to life. Students will improve reading, writing, and performance skills and also increase their confidence and poise in sharing their thoughts & talents with others. Meditative bodywork techniques are also integrated to strengthen concentration, focus, and presentation skill. The bodywork limbers the body & mind and prepares students for any task – on the page, on the stage, or in everyday life.
